Parent-friendly information about communication development in very young children and ways to encourage it

Now we're talking

Who is it for?

Now We're Talking is designed for parents and can reach them in many ways. . .

Speech and Language Therapists
working with parents whose children are experiencing communication delay. The sheets support guidelines given by the therapist and act as a reminder for the parents. They also provide a very accessible consistent link for other workers providing services to this family, supporting integrated service delivery.

Early Years Workers
(childminders, crèche workers, toddler and playgroup leaders, nursery teachers) can incorporate the best practice guidelines given in Now we're talking to support the communication development of the children in their care. They can also give the sheets to parents to encourage a consistent approach to facilitating their child's communication.

Health Visitors
find that First Words offers the opportunity to talk with parents about ways to support their child's development from babbling to the use of first words - with the emphasis on listening and attention and creating 'quiet time' to encourage this. Words Together fits in with the later visit and once more creates opportunities for discussion about ways to support that child's ability to join words together and can be left as a reminder of that discussion.

Training
Now we're talking has been used successfully in a number of training contexts. It is a useful training resource to raise awareness amongst parents and early years workers alike about the development of communication in young children and ways to create a context that supports and maximises that learning. Its colourful and accessible format makes it a rapid reference resource for busy practitioners. Language and communication are the key components for successful further learning in children and supporting this development is therefore a primary task for parents and early years workers.
