Before Words

Parent-friendly information about communication development in very young children and ways to encourage it

Introduction

The ability to communicate is an essential life skill for all children and young people and it underpins a child's social, emotional and educational development.

From the Beginning, Before Words and Now we're talking are a set of attractive pictorial resources with brief captions that offer advice on supporting young children's communication development from pregnancy to the toddler stage.

They were created by two Speech and Language Therapists - Lynn Jones and Gretel McEwen - and developed within Surestart Westgate local programme (now Surestart West Riverside Children's Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne). The project arose from the Surestart focus on early intervention and the provision of good quality information to support parents as the first and best educators of their children.

These resources emphasise the development of relationship and interaction as fundamental to communication and how they underpin social and emotional development in young children.

This guidance should seek not merely to raise awareness and understanding of speech, language and communication, but also to help parents interact directly with their children so as to intensify opportunities for speaking and listening, enlarge their vocabulary and bolster children’s confidence in speaking for themselves. Information and advice should be developed using a variety of innovative formats and media which will meet the needs of a local population.
