From the Beginning, Before Words and Now we're talking are a set of attractive pictorial resources with brief captions that offer advice on supporting young children's communication development from pregnancy to the toddler stage.
They were created by two Speech and Language Therapists - Lynn Jones and Gretel McEwen - and developed within Surestart Westgate local programme (now Surestart West Riverside Children's Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne). The project arose from the Surestart focus on early intervention and the provision of good quality information to support parents as the first and best educators of their children.
These resources emphasise the development of relationship and interaction as fundamental to communication and how they underpin social and emotional development in young children.
01. From the beginning
Tells the story of the unborn child's preparation, in the womb, for forming relationships and developing communication after birth.
Is an attractive resource for parents. It emphasises the development of relationship and interaction during the first year of life, leading to early words.
